I just received the letter below from Birdlife Australia. It is alerting us to the still inadequate actions being taken by the APVMA in regard to our native fauna and the use of rodentcides. Birdlife Australia is continuing the campaign and is wanting to spread the message.

Earlier this year you took action to protect owls and other birds of prey from dangerous rodent poisons that are available on supermarket shelves.

Almost 4,000 people like you made a submission to the Australian Pesticide and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) review into rodenticides, asking for the most harmful second generation products to be taken off supermarket shelves.

The APVMA has recently released a first response to those review submissions, indicating they will be updating labelling of products. While this is a positive move it does not go nearly far enough to protect birds, or to bring Australian regulations in line with European and North American standards.

It’s clear we will need to take further action with both the APVMA and retailers to get these harmful products off consumer shelves, and out of the food chain for birds and other native wildlife.

We’ll need your voice to do this – please stay tuned.

In the meantime, especially with summer gardening work coming up, it’s more important than ever that people know the impact of these harmful products.

Please help us get this message out there by sharing our bird safe gardening information with your friends and family.
